Duquesne Pharmacists Continue Asthma Education Efforts

16 December 2010

In late October Duquesne University’s Mylan School of Pharmacy is partnered with Allegheny General Hospital and the American Lung Association to offer comprehensive asthma education and general health screenings to area youth.

Duquesne pharmacy students will assisted at the Shoot For Your Good Health Asthma Basketball Camp, which targets children ages 6-14 with undiagnosed or poorly controlled asthma. The pharmacy volunteers were organized by Dr. Nicole Marcotullio and Dr. Jennifer Padden, assistant professors of pharmacy practice who received a two-year grant from Pennsylvania’s Commonwealth Universal Research Enhancement that helped fund similar asthma camps at Duquesne earlier this year.

“Duquesne is taking an active role in this camp because asthma is one of the most common chronic illnesses in children,” explained Marcotullio. “The camp is an informal, yet educational setting where we can identify those with the disease and then give them information on triggers and treatment options.”

Pharmacy students helped provide campers with comprehensive information and screenings for asthma, height, weight, carbon monoxide and blood pressure. The team also offered adults general health screenings and information on smoking cessation.
